Analog Market to Grow $8 Billion by 2020, says Semico Research

Analog ICs are critical to nearly all electronic devices.  The global electronics market will consume over 127.5 billion analog ICs in 2016, which translates to several analog ICs per electronic device.  Analog ICs experienced stronger than average growth over the last several years as the mobility products grew at double digit rates.  These products have a higher than average analog content thus growth has exceeded the overall market.

The IP Subsystems Market to Reach a 17.6% CAGR through 2020, says Semico Research

As the semiconductor industry approaches the end of the second decade of the 21st century, substantial changes to the System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design methodology are taking shape. Instead of dealing with SoC design at the lowest common denominator – the discrete SIP block, SoC designers now look to move up a layer of abstraction to design with system level functionality to reduce the effort and cost associated with complex SoC designs today.

3D Printing Industry Expected to Top $6.5 Billion in Revenue in 2016, says Semico Research

The 3D printing market got a shot in the arm this week as HP began taking orders for its long-awaited HP Jet Fusion 3D printer.  HP claims its printer is faster than existing 3D printers and more cost-effective.  Using a proprietary technology, the printer is targeted at industrial customers for mass production.  The HP Jet Fusion currently only prints in nylon (but will accommodate other materials in the future), and involves post-processing of printed items, requiring another purchase in addition to the printer itself.

ASIC Design Starts in Transportation to Increase by 7.1% in 2016, Says Semico Research

Increasing numbers of IoT solutions, adds to the growth in new design starts.  Certain applications, such as those associated with automotive, are expected to follow a higher growth curve over the next few years.  In addition to all the infotainment accessories and electric vehicle demands that have already been added to vehicles, the vision of autonomous driving brings a need for safety, connectivity and more accurate sensing capabilities.

Energy Harvesting to Drive Semiconductor Sales to $3 Billion by 2020, says Semico Research

Whether it's the Internet of Things (IoT), wearables, or industrial automation, new devices and applications are portable, battery-operated and require continuous power.  Wireless connectivity is required for connecting to the Internet.  Today's devices collect and transmit data from sensors, are always or almost always on and require power.  The semiconductor industry has met the challenge to design devices for low power operation.
