Jim Feldhan Identifies Key Markets for TSV Applications

Phoenix, Arizona December 13, 2011 - Today at the 3-D Architectures for Semiconductor Integration and Packaging event in Burlingame, CA, Jim Feldhan, President, Semico Research Corp. addressed the end market applications that are driving 3-D semiconductor packaging. Even as the semiconductor industry suffers from a slowdown, innovators continue to develop 3-D packaging options.

The Great Semiconductor Migration

Phoenix, Arizona December 6, 2011 - In previous forecast periods, there have been dozens of products that have lead innovation within semiconductors. Affectionately called "Splitters" by our Senior VP Morry Marshall, consumers have historically demanded a variety of mobile devices to fit their needs.

No more. We're in a revolutionary period of content distribution and as the old saying goes, content is king. To adapt, OEMs are going to need new strategies that understand not only how to market to consumers, but how their needs are evolving, and how they can foresee solutions.

Semico Asks: Can MEMS Market Sustain Its Growth Rate?

Phoenix, Arizona November 29, 2011 - The MEMS market has shown a high growth rate which runs counter to the overall semiconductor market. In 2011 MEMS sales are expected to grow 20% reaching $9.2 billion. MEMS devices are migrating quickly into consumer electronics thanks to their use in smartphones.

In just a few years MEMS have migrated from a niche product for the automotive industry into the mainstream of the semiconductor market. In order for MEMS to continue on this high growth path there are several issues that need to be addressed.

Memory Wafer Demand and Capacity Analysis

Phoenix, Arizona November 20, 2007 - The most far-reaching development in semiconductor production in this decade was development of a non-volatile memory technology with manufacturing similarities and volume requirements approaching that of DRAM. This newfound opportunity to balance fab requirements between two high-volume products has permanently altered the dynamics for both of these ultra-competitive products.

Where the Smart Money Goes in Semiconductors

Phoenix, Arizona November 16, 2011 - When you think of profitable semiconductor categories, what comes to your mind? In a good year, NAND and DRAM can be very profitable. Considering Intel's size and position in the market, Micro Logic would be another good guess. But the smart money goes to the Analog market for long-term, stable profitability. The analog segment is the subject of a new study just released by Semico Research Corp., Analog Market Trends: Fourth Quarter 2011.

Semico Forecasts 2011 Revenues will be Down 1.4%

Phoenix, Arizona November 2, 2011 - As we head into November, Semico's forecast of a weak second half is showing to be accurate. June, July, and August all had poor performance and according to the IPI, we will see that trend continue into 1Q12. February of 2012 is still forecasted to be the bottom as OEMs are currently burning off inventory while foundries cut back on capital expenditures.

Phoenix, Arizona October 25, 2011 - Tony Massimini, Chief of Technology for Semico Research, will speak at the MEMS Executive Congress on November 2, 2011. Tony will provide a semiconductor and MEMS market outlook during the MEMS Market Analyst Panel, to be held from 2:10-4:30pm.

Power Management Controls the World

Phoenix, Arizona October 18, 2011 - Power management ICs (PMICs) are your friend. These overlooked, but very necessary devices, help manage and prolong battery life in the indispensable electronics we all rely on: iPhones, iPads, Droid phones, Blackberries, laptops, etc.

45nm and Below Grabs 24% of Wafer Demand in 2011

2011 Wafer Demand by Product by Technology Phoenix, Arizona October 14, 2011 - The economic malaise in Europe and the U.S., along with the natural disasters around the world, have put a damper on 2011 semiconductor sales. Heading into the holiday buying season, consumer confidence is low and inventories are higher than preferred. OEMs are, at best, cautious and in most cases, pessimistic about their markets. Semico expected a shakeout in the tablet market and anticipated slower economic growth; however, conditions in the 3rd quarter prompted a downward adjustment to the forecast.
