Automotive Design Starts CAGR to Reach 5.5% by 2025, says Semico Research

SoC (System on a Chip) Automotive applications are undergoing a renaissance in technology that looks at ultimately empowering autonomous driving. There are several stages in this evolution and the industry is far from this goal today, but this effort has ignited the interest and imagination of the driving public around the world. A new report from Semico Research, Design Starts for 2022 by Key End Market Applications, (SC106-22), forecasts that design starts in the automotive segment will reach 5.5% by 2025.

"Today's designs, not just in automotive but across all market segments, are focused on complexity driven by AI functionality and integration of wireless interfaces," says Jim Feldhan, President, Semico Research.  "They are many times more complex than those from several years ago. This complexity is driving design costs up to higher levels than the industry has previously seen. However, through the use of derivative SoC designs, the increasing use of discrete 3rd Party IP blocks and the emergence of IP Subsystems into the market, rising design costs can be managed to the point that design start activity can continue and even increase."

Additional key findings of the report include:

  • Worldwide ASIC market unit shipments increased 10.0% in 2020.
  • Commercial Vehicle ASIC Unit Shipments will have a CAGR of 25.1% over the forecast period.
  • Internet of Things ASIC Unit Shipments will approach 3.26 billion in 2023.
  • Advanced Performance Multicore SoC shipments will surpass 15 billion units by 2025.

Semico Research's new report, Design Starts for 2022 by Key End Market Applications, (SC106-22), offers a comprehensive analysis of the ASIC design start landscape today and into the future. It provides excellent data for product planning, marketing and sales activities at fabless semiconductor companies, 3rd Party IP vendors and major OEMs and IDMs. The report includes:

  • 55 end market applications analyzed and organized into categories by Computer, Consumer, Communications, Industrial and Automotive.
  • Nine ASIC product types including Mixed-Signal; Analog; Advanced Performance Multicore, Value Multicore and Basic SoCs; FPGAs and PLDs; Gate Array and Structured ASICs.
  • Two years of history (2019–2020) and a 5-year forecast (2021–2025).
  • ASIC design starts and unit shipments for each application and each product type.
