Automotive MOS Logic Units on Track to Grow 35% in 2018, Says Semico Research

Artificial intelligence in the IoT category-especially automotive, industrial and home automation-has helped boost semiconductor unit sales. Growth in these sectors, as well as in agriculture and smart cities, is expected to further expand semiconductor demand. A new research report from Semico Research, Semico Wafer Demand Update Q3 2018 (MA112-18), forecasts that Automotive MOS Logic units are on track to grow 35% in 2018.

"Automotive MOS Logic includes MOS Logic ICs designed specifically for use in auto entertainment, navigation, driver information, engine controls and other automotive applications," according to Joanne Itow, Managing Director Manufacturing Research. "These ICs are categorized into Infotainment and Other Automotive."

Additional key findings include:

  • Total wafer demand in 2018 is expected to reach 115.5 million wafers in 300mm equivalents.
  • Despite increasing ASPs and a transition to higher-density products, DRAM unit sales continue to grow in a broad spectrum of markets.
  • Microprocessor revenues are forecast to increase 5.5% in 2018.
  • Sensor Wafer demand is expected to increase 6.5% to 1.9 million.

Semico Research's report, Semico Wafer Demand Update Q3 2018 (MA112-18)includes an Excel spreadsheet which provides wafer demand by 18 product categories and 14 technology nodes over a 13-year time frame from 2010 to 2022. There is also a summary write-up which provides insight into the recent trends for key semiconductor product categories.
