SIP Market Mysteries Explored and Myths Exploded

Phoenix, Arizona March 15, 2011 - 2010 was a very good year for the 3rd Party SIP market which rebounded from its first ever revenue decline in 2009. Even though the market showed good growth in 2010, it essentially moved sideways with a 21.5% growth compared to a 21.6% decline in 2009. However, looking at only SIP market annual revenues obscures several very interesting trends in the SIP market and in the broader System-on-a-Chip (SoC) market.

2011 Semiconductor Capex: Big Spending, Trouble Looming

Phoenix, Arizona March 8, 2011 - The semiconductor industry experienced an outstanding recovery in 2010. Revenues grew 32%, while units grew 25%. Manufacturers responded to the sharp increase in demand by spending almost $50 billion, a 91% increase over 2009, on capital equipment, buildings and land. In 2011, Semico's forecast for the industry is an 8.3% increase in revenues and a 13.5% increase in units.

2011: Crash and Burn or Return to Normalcy?

Source: Semico Research Corp. Phoenix, Arizona March 1, 2011 - Seasonally, the first half of most typical years, semiconductor sales are weak and not necessarily indicative of a downturn. This year however, the first half will be up over 2%, a healthy growth rate after the 31.8% increase in revenues the industry experienced in 2010. 2011 represents a return to the "normal" semiconductor cycle, averaging an 8% increase in revenue YOY. There has been excitement in the industry lately for the consumer and automotive markets, and the memory and IP markets.

What's the Fastest Growing Semiconductor MOS Logic Market? (Hint: It's Not Microprocessors)

Phoenix, Arizona February 22, 2011 - It should come as no surprise that semiconductor foundry manufacturers are booming. The semiconductor industry has been transformed. But it's not just fabless versus IDM (Integrated Device Manufacturer). Revenue has shifted from Embedded MPUs, MCUs, DSPs and Standard Cell ASICs to Special Purpose Logic chips. Integration has taken over MOS Logic sales, creating a huge increase in the sales of fully integrated semiconductors. Most of these chips are being manufactured by foundries.

Momentum Carries MCUs Into 2011

Phoenix, Arizona February 8, 2011 - Microcontrollers (MCUs) are a class of chips that we use everyday without even thinking about it. We take them for granted, yet they make our lives so much easier. These smart chips help control our hard disk drives, printers, ATMs, TVs, MP3 players, refrigerators and other computing and consumer devices. Who can live without their cell phone or their DVR? What about their car? The largest market for MCU sales, automotive, has had a major impact as car manufacturers have seen strong world wide resurgence in sales in 2010.

Tight Capacity Forced Semiconductor Production Efficiencies in 2010

Phoenix, Arizona January 25, 2011 - The semiconductor industry has celebrated the 30+% semiconductor revenue growth in 2010. Semiconductor unit sales also increased an impressive 31%. But wafer demand, based on semiconductor product shipments, only increased 22%. How can this be? Semiconductor manufacturers were once again caught in a capacity bind due to underinvestment over the past several years. However, according to Joanne Itow, Managing Director, "This industry is known for delivering solutions under pressure."
