Semico Research Releases Report: Set Top Boxes: Ready, Set, Growth!

Phoenix, Arizona November 8, 2005 - Semico Research maintains its position that semiconductor sales opportunities are being created in emerging consumer markets. A recent study completed by the firm on the digital set top box market show both the semiconductor unit and revenue total available markets (TAMs) will continue to increase at double-digit CAGRs.

The market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 16.2% between 2004 and 2009, with units shipped increasing from 46.0 million units to 97.4 over the same period.

As the concept of the digital home continues to evolve the debate over what device will take the central role in the home network spars discussion. Semico believes the market will eventually evolve into two main solutions, a PC-centric solution and a media hub functionality that is integrated into devices such as DVD players and set top boxes, according to a previous report (What’s All the Media Hubbub?*).

“The digital set top box market is evolving from low-end systems that provide basic digital video to mid-range systems with personal video recorder functionality and multiple tuners, all the way to high-end units with high-definition capabilities and interactive applications,” said Connie Wong, Director of Wireless Communications for Semico. “The consumer push to go digital and the availability of more affordable digital television sets is one of main factors driving this growth,” she stated.

The convergence needs of video, voice and high-speed data, coined as the triple play is the second attribution. Opportunities are tremendous for set top box manufacturers, semiconductor manufacturers, service and content providers, along with telecom, satellite and cable companies. Successful deployment, quality, reliability and increased functionality will be critical success factors from a consumer vantage point.

As a result, intense competition is sure to ensue across the platform board. Semico’s latest report titled, “Set Top Boxes: Ready, Set, Growth!” fields market trends and requirements, types of set top boxes, the competitive environment/players, technology trends, market and regional forecasts. Adding to this robust listing of report offerings include a technology roadmap complete with block diagrams, BOMs, semiconductor ASPs, wafer demand, market share plus semiconductor unit and revenue TAM.
