Sensor Wafer Demand to increase by nearly 8% in 2019, says Semico Research

Mature processes for sensor and optoelectronic products continue to be in high demand, aided by growth in Internet of Things (IoT) applications along with more smart devices that are beginning to build in algorithms that are the precursor to full-fledged AI functionality. New research from Semico Research, Semico Wafer Demand Q2 2019 Highlights (MA111-19), reports that wafer demand for sensor products will increase nearly 8% in 2019.
"Last year, both 200mm and 300mm wafers were in short supply, and wafer prices have been increasing over the past two years.  Almost all semiconductor product categories suffered a decline in wafer demand in Q1 2019 based on a quarterly year-over-year and a sequential quarter-over-quarter comparison," says Joanne Itow, Manager of Semico's Manufacturing Research.  "The sensor category has been the one exception to that trend, and, although no one wants their market to experience a unit contraction, the silver lining is that this will provide some relief when it comes to getting enough silicon for production, and it may provide a temporary reprieve to the increasing wafer prices."
Additional key findings include:

  • The 2019 semiconductor unit forecast is expected to decline by 3% while wafer demand will decline 6.9%.
  • In 2019, NAND wafer demand is expected to decrease 16.3%.
  • Microprocessor revenues are forecast to decrease less than 3% in 2019 while units are expected to decline 5.6%.
  • Consumer MOS Logic units are expected to decline 15% in 2019.

Semico Research's report, Semico Wafer Demand Q2 2019 Highlights (MA111-19),includes an Excel spreadsheet which provides wafer demand by 18 product categories and 14 technology nodes over a 13-year time frame from 2010 to 2022. There is also a summary write-up which provides insight into the recent trends for key semiconductor product categories.
