It gives a top down approach, and includes a regional forecast, a bill of materials, a list of ASPs for each device type, a total available market, wafer demand, as well as a tier 1/2 OEM listing.     Definitions:  Feature Phones and Smartphones

    In general, a Feature Phone:

    • Can make phone calls
    • Has a physical or virtual QWERTY keyboard
    • Provides much of the capability of a PDA
    • Can run native apps
    • Has multiple antennas with connections to Wi-Fi, GPS or other wireless services in addition to its cell phone network connection.

    In general, a Smartphone has all the capabilities of a Feature Phone and:

    • May have a large (>3.2") touchscreen
    • Has more computing power than a contemporary feature phone
    • Runs an open OS (Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry OS, WebOS (Palm), Symbian)
    • Has a connection to a cell phone network that is the most advanced generation or at most one generation behind the leading network, i.e. 4G/3G today
    • Can browse the full Internet.

    Smartphone feature sets change over time.  What constituted a smartphone in 2003 is not at all the same as in 2012.  This definition will therefore change over time.  Furthermore, the definition begins with "In general..." because not all phones that are considered smartphones will have all these features.  For example, BlackBerries without touchscreens are still considered smartphones because of their other features.  Smartphones represent a portion of the mid-range phones and all of the high-end phones in the Semico MAP Model.
