Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Design Starts to Increase Over 26% in 2020, says Semico Research

Over the past several years, the Internet of Things (IoT) applications have had a significant impact on ASIC design starts. IoT unit volumes are ultimately expected to be massive, and this category of semiconductors will have a great impact on the overall industry. Semico is now seeing more differentiation in IoT applications in consumer-related products versus Industrial IoT (IIoT) related products. The IIoT solutions are aimed at factory floor applications to upgrade and enhance equipment used by the manufacturing sector and for smart city infrastructure improvements such as lighting, traffic control and security. These solutions will be used extensively worldwide. Semico Research's new report, Design Starts for 2019 by Key End Market Applications, SC106-19, forecasts Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) design starts to increase over 26% in 2020.

"Semico expects the IIoT applications to become very large over time, since replacing existing equipment can directly improve the profitability of companies in a short amount of time and also increase the quality of their products," says Rich Wawrzyniak, Senior Analyst ASIC/SoC Research. "Installing IIoT equipment can pay for itself rapidly and is being looked at worldwide as a way to quickly improve efficiency and profitability."

Additional key findings of the report include:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) unit shipments will have a 27.5% CAGR through 2023.
  • Basic SoC unit shipments in the Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality segment will reach 23.5 million by 2023.
  • 5G infrastructure ASIC design starts will have an 18.9% CAGR over the forecast period.
  • Advanced Performance Multicore SoC shipments will approach 13.9 billion units in 2023.

Semico Research's new report, Design Starts for 2019 by Key End Market Applications, SC106-19, offers a comprehensive analysis of the ASIC design start landscape today and into the future. It provides excellent data for product planning, marketing and sales activities at fabless semiconductor companies, 3rd Party IP vendors and major OEMs and IDMs.

The report includes:

  • 71 end market applications analyzed and organized into categories by Computer, Consumer, Communications, Industrial and Automotive.
  • Nine ASIC product types including Mixed-Signal, Analog, Advanced Performance Multicore, Value Multicore and Basic SoCs, FPGAs and PLDs, Gate Array and Structured ASICs.
  • Two years of history (2017 -2018) and a 5-year forecast (2019 - 2023).
  • ASIC design starts and unit shipments for each application and each product type.
