Wafer Demand Summary and Assumptions 3Q14

The Wafer Demand Summary and Assumptions is a quarterly publication. It includes an excel spreadsheet with annual wafer demand by product by technology from 2002-2018. Product categories include DRAM, SRAM, NAND, NOR, Other Non-volatile, MPU, MCU, DSP, Computing Micro Logic, Communications, Other Micro Logic, Programmable Logic, Standard Cell, Gate Array, Analog, Discrete, Optoelectronics, Digital Bipolar. In addition, there is a five-page summary write-up providing the major assumptions behind the forecast and changes from the previous quarter.

The Mobile & Wearable Market will Reach 2.9B Units by 2018, Says Semico Research

The markets for wearable devices, smartphones and tablet PCs are large and growing quickly.  By 2018 sensor sales into mobile devices and wearables will reach $28.3 billion.  There are over 75 sensor vendors targeting these markets.  More sensors are being designed in which enable new features and functions.

Total Analog Revenues for 2014 Expected to Reach over $43 Billion, Says Semico Research

The shift to mobile has given a huge boost to the analog market.  Interfacing with the real world via cameras, touch, gesture controls, audio and video applications all require analog functionality.  In addition, power management ICs are critical to the success of these devices.  These growing applications have added significant volumes to analog unit sales.

Cell Phones Accounted for 23% of $5 Billion Timing Market, Says Semico Research

Oscillators and clock generators are timing devices, which are needed in just about all electronic circuits.  Quartz crystal oscillators, along with clock generators, are a $5 billion market that MEMS oscillator vendors are hoping to crack.  Quartz crystal is well established, and system designers are accustomed to using these devices.

2014 Semiconductor Revenues will Increase over 7%, Says Semico Research

Semiconductor revenues are on track to grow over 7% in 2014.  This is a welcome improvement over the last three years but is still below the industry average post the dotcom bubble.

During the 1990s the compound annual growth rate for semiconductor revenues averaged 15% and units averaged almost 11%.  Tossing out the anomaly of 2000 and calculating the CAGR from 2001 - 2010, revenues grew at an 8.9% CAGR.

Analog Forecast, Products, Suppliers and Foundries

As electronic systems evolved to mobile devices the importance of analog has grown.  Interfacing with the real world via cameras, touch, gesture controls, audio and video applications all require analog functionality.  In addition, power management ICs are critical to the success of these devices.  These growing applications have added significant volumes to the analog unit sales.

IPv6 will be the Unifying Protocol for IoT, Says Semico Research

The number of devices with capability for sensing and connectivity is growing at an exponential rate.  Many companies look to the development of the Internet of Things (IoT) to drive new growth for existing products and open up new business opportunities.  The concept of the IoT is far ranging.  As the name implies it is the interconnection of many things which encompass different functions.
